Health experts have warned that Rachel Reeves’ plan to cut the price of biscuits and chocolate as part of cost-of-living help for struggling families could lead to the “overconsumption” of unhealthy foods. The chancellor announced she would slash import tariffs on shopping basket staples, expected to include baked beans, marmalade, crisps, margarine, biscuits, chocolate and tomato ketchup, in a move which could save consumers a combined £150 million per year. Baby dropped from window of burning home saved by police officer
A police officer managed to catch a baby as it was chucked out of a window during a house fire. Bodycam footage shared by Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety on Tuesday (19 May) shows an officer running towards the ablaze house in Michigan, where a mother and her infant were trapped. He then instructed the mother to “kick down the screen” and throw him her baby from the second-floor window. Hands out stretched, the officer reassured the woman that he “got it” before successfully catching the child. A ladder was then deployed moments later which allowed the mother to safely climb down. Both the mother and child were transported to a hospital for precautionary tests. Neither sustained injuries. US intel shows surprising speed of Tehran’s military rebuild
Iran is rebuilding its military industrial base much faster than expected, according to US intelligence sources. During the six-week ceasefire, CNN reports that the country has restarted some of its drone production already as well as replacing missile sites, launchers and production capacity destroyed during the conflict. “The Iranians have exceeded all timelines the IC had for reconstitution,” a US official said. President Donald Trump told reporters he is in no hurry to bring the war with Iran to an end, and achieving the mission’s objectives was more important than setting a timeline for its conclusion. Iran, meanwhile, threatened to extend the war beyond the Middle East and will not surrender if the US restarts attacks. Parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said on Wednesday that “obvious and hidden moves by the enemy" showed that they were seeking a new round of war. Trump bailed himself out of IRS trouble and got a $1.8B compensation fund
After Donald Trump sued his own administration for $10 billion, pitting his personal lawyers against the Department of Justice, the president was gifted a broad, single-page document that gives him sweeping immunity from tax crimes. Under the guise of a “settlement” between his lawyers and his administration, the president and his allies will both receive government handouts potentially worth tens of millions of dollars. Alleged “victims” of government “weaponization” can file for a piece of a nearly $1.8 billion compensation fund, while the president, his family and their businesses escape government scrutiny for tax debts over which they have been under investigation for more than a decade. Legal experts tell The Independent that the agreement is a blatant and illegal act of self-dealing by the administration. “There is a federal crime that prohibits exactly what the president did, and for exactly this reason, to prevent a corrupt president from using the IRS to their own advantage,” according to UC Berkeley Law professor Brian Galle, a former federal prosecutor with the Justice Department’s Tax Division. “This is an episode that would have brought down any other presidency in American history,” he told The Independent. The one-page agreement — printed on the Office of the Attorney General letterhead and signed by Trump’s former criminal defense lawyer and now Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche — “forever” blocks the federal government from “prosecuting or pursuing” any tax claims against the president, members of his family and their businesses. Meanwhile, a five-member board made up of Blanche’s appointees will arrange payments from a $1.776 billion fund to recipients whose identities will remain secret. Blanche has publicly stated that Trump and his family are not eligible, but Blanche has not ruled out payments to the president’s donors and allies, raising questions about the process and who stands to benefit. Top Democrats on the House Judiciary and Ways and Means committees are pressing the administration for answers. “Never in American history has a president pursued corruption this brazenly or on such a colossal scale,” Reps. Jamie Raskin and Richard Neal wrote to Blanche, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and IRS CEO Frank Bisignano. “Essentially, the federal government threw in a Super-Pardon for the president, his family, and related and affiliated entities, freeing them not only from any accountability for any taxes they may have dodged, but other pending federal criminal or civil investigations like insider trading, antitrust violations, false statements, or even sexual harassment,” they wrote Wednesday. It’s unclear whether Trump’s attempts to evade the IRS and will survive in Congress or against a Democratically controlled White House. IRS deal ‘crosses the line into illegality’ Trump’s agreement, which applies only to existing audits, could spare the president and his family from a more than $100 million tax penalty. An audit centered on a nearly $73 million tax refund Trump claimed around 2010, which the former real estate developer and reality TV host justified by reporting steep business losses, largely tied to his casino holdings and his Chicago skyscraper. The IRS contended that Trump improperly claimed the same losses twice for the Chicago tower, where he reported losses of up to $651 million. Trump, who has been fighting the audit for years, accused the IRS of failing to prevent the leak of his tax returns. “The deal that Trump extracted from the government he leads is really a spectacular demonstration of the fact that there really are two sets of tax rules, one for those at the top, and another for the rest of us,” according to Steve Wamhoff, federal policy director with the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy, a nonpartisan tax policy group. “Trump and his officials view themselves as untethered from the tax laws that apply to normal Americans,” he told The Independent. Summer savings: Reeves announces cost of living support package

US test fires a dozen rockets near Mount Fuji in rapid ‘shoot and scoot’ drill
U.S. Marines test fired a dozen rockets from a mobile launcher on Wednesday at a range in the foothills of Japan's iconic Mount Fuji, in an exercise to keep sharp on weapon that is a growingly important component of the American military's arsenal. The High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) is a launcher mounted on the back of a military truck that can be rapidly brought out from concealment, fire its rockets, then move quickly to a new location to avoid counter-battery fire. The so-called “shoot and scoot” tactics are becoming increasingly important with the proliferation of drones over the battlefield, which make static positions more vulnerable. The system has been used by U.S. forces in Iraq and Afghanistan, and most recently U.S. Central Command said it was employed in the opening attack on Iran where it launched a new precision-guided rocket that could reach targets hundreds of miles away. The Trump administration has indicted Raúl Castro, the former president of Cuba and brother of the late Fidel, on charges stemming from the 1996 shootdown of four pilots with Brothers to the Rescue, an anti-Castro organization formed by Cuban exiles with ties to the CIA. Peter Kornbluh, a Cuba specialist at the National Security Archive, says that the indictment could provide justification for a possible future attempt to capture or assassinate the 94-year-old Castro, and warns that the U.S. may soon conduct an operation in Cuba similar to its seizure of Nicholás Maduro in Venezuela earlier this year.

The U.S. has resettled just over 6,000 refugees between October and April — all except three were from South Africa. President Trump has said Afrikaners face racial persecution and genocide in South Africa, claims that have been rejected by the U.N. Human Rights Office, among others. Last year, he cut off aid to the country. "Whiteness is being recast as endangered," says Lebohang Pheko, a professor of practice at the University of Johannesburg. "There is a move towards the alt-right, the MAGA discourse, which is about replacement theory." Pheko also suggests that Trump's actions toward South Africa are retribution for the genocide case it brought against Israel at the International Court of Justice.

There will be no live student speakers at the City University of New York's School of Law or at New York University's school-specific ceremonies after former students gave speeches that included expressing support for Palestine and criticism of Israel. Rutgers University canceled biotech CEO Rami Elghandour's commencement speech at its School of Engineering's convocation, citing complaints about his social media posts on Israel and Palestine. And the University of Michigan's president issued a public apology after professor Derek Peterson praised pro-Palestine students during his commencement address. "Our students are being told that your families, Palestinian families, are expected to suffer and die, and you should be OK with it," says Noura Erakat, a Palestinian human rights attorney and professor at Rutgers University. Erakat adds that Rutgers professors have been asked not to teach about the conditions in Gaza. "We are asked to betray the empirical record, including the one on genocide and apartheid, and we refuse to do that." "We are processing resettlement cases for white Afrikaners at a record pace," adds Sharif Aly, president of the International Refugee Assistance Project, which is currently litigating a class-action lawsuit challenging the Trump administration's dismantling of the United States refugee program. While Afrikaners are being quickly resettled, "thousands of other people who have went through years of vetting, who have went through years of persecution and violence," are being blocked from entering the U.S., says Aly. 'There's no ceasefire': Sister of assassinated Hamas leader to The Grayzone
On May 16, a missile from an Israeli drone slammed into a Gaza City residential apartment building late in the evening, killing 7 people and wounding 50. Among the dead is Izz al-Din al-Haddad, known as Abu Shuaib, the general commander of Hamas’ Al Qassam Brigades – effectively the leader of the resistance in Gaza The assassination takes place amid a ceasefire which Israel has consistently violated, and which it has no intention of honoring It is clearly aimed at weakening the resistance, while provoking it into open conflict as Israel bombards Southern Lebanon and edges once again toward war on Iran Izz al-Din al-Haddad was considered a seminal figure in the advancement of Gaza’s armed resistance.
